Barnes & Noble?

cottagejournal

One day, as I was browsing through home decor magazines at Barnes & Noble, an older woman slowly walked by, then turned around and focused her attention on me.

“You don’t mind if I sit next to you, do you?” she said as she cozied in, shoulder touching mine.

“Seriously?” I thought to myself as I glanced down the length of the bench. There was plenty of room for her not to be sitting practically on top of me!

She told me that she was waiting for her two sons, and I quickly realized that she was tired, cold, and more than ready to call it a day. I thought of my own grandma, and suddenly I didn’t mind sharing my warmth.

She asked where I lived, and then described a family home surrounded by two acres of spruce, walnut, and hickory trees, where her grandchildren loved to run, collect nuts, and chase the squirrels. “Walnut trees only produce every other year, you know,” she said.

Actually, I didn’t know! She went on to delight me with the details of a life well lived, and I listened with interest until her sons came to take her home.

In that moment, I missed my grandma intensely, and I wondered if she had somehow engineered this meeting to remind me that our connections with others, no matter how brief, can bring the moments of joy that make life worth living.

I may have missed out on the latest trends in home decor that day, but I left with something much more valuable; remembering that qualities like patience, kindness, and respect will never go out of style.

Sometimes I kill plants.

Ok, a lot of the time I kill plants.

I’ve been able to keep a few African violets and a jade plant alive for a few years, and I’m proud of myself for that (YAY, me!). However, it is nice to have alternative options that aren’t so challenging to take care of, so I do have some faux plants in my home as well.

Most recently, I purchased a Nearly Natural Maiden Hair Artificial Plant from Walmart and as soon as I opened the box, I just loved it. It comes with its own pot and faux soil, and the “roots” at the base of the plant make it look very realistic. Even after touching it, people think it’s real!

I’ve been moving it to different spots around my house ever since it arrived and I’m seriously considering adding another plant from this collection.

Suddenly my thumb is looking a little greener!

All is calm… All is bright.

“I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.”

— Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

Last weekend, I finally had the chance to spend some quality time with a few dear friends, who warmed my house with laughter and holiday cheer.

With each passing year it seems more difficult to hold onto the traditions that make the holiday special… but those little touches are so worth it when they are noticed and appreciated by the people you love.

Just trimming the tree can take hours, especially when you have twice as many ornaments as you have branches!

My friends helped me decorate my tree this year, and it was so nice. Everyone had their own idea of where to put the ornaments, and it turned out beautifully… my favorite tree ever!

Mom helped decorate too. “I know these ornaments as well as I know my own.” And she should! We’ve spent hours together in darling little shops, searching for “the ornament” to grace that year’s tree. I love unwrapping them at Christmas time and oohing and ahhing over each one.

Now that the halls are decked, I’m looking forward to relaxing with my family, and of course, enjoying some delicious holiday treats!

gifts

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and the most wonderful New Year!

Oh, and Santa… my stocking is hung by the chimney with care. I’ll be leaving you the usual cookies and milk; just don’t get any ideas about my Cookie Butter!

I need something tufted.

I have a mad desire for a tufted piece of furniture. A sofa, a chair, an ottoman . . . anything will do!

I’ve been thinking about redesigning my office in a more feminine color palette. I’m picturing a pretty powder blue. Powder blue lends itself to tufting!

I can’t afford a remodel just yet, but dreams are free, so I’ll be looking online and devouring design magazines for ideas until then.

Let me know if you see something, would you?

UPDATE: I got something tufted! A set of velvet club chairs from Anthropologie. Not powder blue, but a pretty teal.

Sunshine and Flowers

Sometimes life can be a little much. My life has been A LOT much in recent months!

I’m pretty resilient, but when you have to pick yourself up and dust yourself off a couple of times a day for months on end, it can really affect your good nature.

I finally worked myself out of it, and feel like posting again, especially now that it’s spring; the perfect time to refocus and renew.

And speaking of renewal, I’ve been doing a lot of that around the house lately. I just felt like some of my rooms needed a little refreshing after such a long winter. I wanted to brighten things up and let in the sunshine!

But more on that later . . . This weekend was BEAUTIFUL, so I spent most of it outside; shopping for flowers, buying flowers, and planting flowers. Just like inside, I wanted to do something a little different this year.

A friend of mine has been talking about decorating his balcony, and after seeing some of the most darling balconies online, I thought, “I want to decorate a balcony, too!”

The fact that I don’t actually have a balcony posed a bit of a problem, but where there’s a will, there’s a way (as they say). So . . .

TA-DAAA!!!

balcony

My new balcony!

(Just between you and me . . . It’s actually my side entryway.) However, I rarely use it, so why not make it into something great. With a little imagination, anything is possible!

See you soon.

Santa Claus Lane

The wreaths are up on the lamp posts at the University near my house; my street’s very own version of “Santa Claus Lane.”

I was so tickled seeing them for the first time a few days ago, and now I have the pleasure of driving past them every day on my way home from work.

Some people grumble at the sight of Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving, but I just love it. We can celebrate BOTH holidays. That’s why it’s called “the holiday season,” right?

Considering that I was humming Christmas carols well before Halloween, I think I’ll continue to embrace the early arrival of all things glittered.

In today’s busy, no-time-to-stop-and-smell-the-roses-world, a little extra holiday magic can’t hurt!

p.s. Are you singing “Here Comes Santa Claus?” I am!
