Loretta’s Sugar Cookies

Once in a while, you are blessed to meet a person with a truly giving spirit. Loretta was that person for my family and me.

Since my parents were transplants from another area, she adopted them, the four of us, and even my nieces when they came along. Not a holiday would go by without her dropping off a tin of her delicious sugar cookies, along with a multitude of other special treats.

This old fashioned cookie simply melts in your mouth with a lovely vanilla almond flavor that is wonderfully unique.

Occasionally, Loretta would drizzle a thin glaze over the top and sprinkle them with colored sugar to dress them up for the season. We just loved them.

So, in honor of Loretta and her kind-hearted nature, I’m happy to share this treasured recipe along with my memories. Enjoy!

Mrs. Drentell’s Molasses Sugar Cookies

I have a vague childhood memory of Mrs. Drentell standing at the door of her house, which was kitty corner from my grandparents’ house on South Main Street. I have vivid memories, however, of my mother making batch after batch of this tried and true cookie. Soft and chewy with the perfect combination of spices, you’re gonna love this one! (And thank you, Mrs. Drentell, for being so generous in sharing your recipe.)

3/4 c. butter
1 c. sugar
1/4 c. molasses
1 egg
*****
2 c. flour; sifted
2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt

Combine butter and sugar. Add molasses and egg. Combine dry ingredients in a separate bowl, and add to mixture.

Chill dough. Roll into balls. Press on greased cookie sheet with a sugar dipped glass.

Bake at 375° for 8 minutes.

UPDATE: Mom just informed me that Mrs. Drentell didn’t live across the street; she lived next door. And I had never met her. Well, I did say “vague” memory . . .
